Respite Care, Short Term Accommodation and the NDIS
What is respite care?
Respite care is designed to give both you and your informal support a well-earned break.
By staying in short-term accommodation, you’re treated to a change of scenery and a break from routine, while your informal support network also get some time to themselves. Respite care isn’t just about the accommodation, it also involves the support you receive while staying there. Depending on the level of care you require, we allow you to share a support worker with other guests, which can help give you more value for money.

How does the NDIS fund STA?
The NDIS funds STA under the core support category ‘Assistance with Daily Living’ (Category 1).
The amount of funding you can receive depends on the level of support you require. Generally, the more support your informal network or carer provide, the more breaks they may need throughout the year and the more funding for STA you’ll receive.
Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) provides temporary housing for individuals who require short-term accommodation while they wait for more permanent housing options or while transitioning between services. It offers a supportive environment with necessary facilities and care, allowing individuals to maintain stability and independence during this period.
How does NDIS fund MTA ?
The NDIS funds Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) for participants who need temporary housing for 90 days or more while transitioning to permanent accommodation. MTA funding covers the cost of accommodation and associated support services, such as daily living assistance and personal care, and is typically included in a participant’s NDIS plan under “Capacity Building” or “Core Supports.” It helps individuals maintain stability and independence while awaiting long-term housing solutions.
Individual Living Options (ILO)
Individual Living Options (ILO) is a flexible NDIS support that provides participants with the opportunity to live independently in the community, with tailored support based on their needs. ILO focuses on building independence by offering support in areas such as daily living, personal care, and social participation. The program is designed to empower participants, enabling them to live in a home of their choice, with assistance that promotes autonomy and community involvement.
How does NDIS fund ILO>
ILO is funded through the NDIS under the “Capacity Building Supports” category. Funding is provided for tailored support that helps participants live independently, including assistance with daily living, personal care, and community engagement, based on their individual needs and goals.
